South of Carmel, Highway 1 becomes Big Sur — the most photographed road in America, best driven before the tour buses wake up. Back on the peninsula, the Monterey Bay Aquarium anchors Cannery Row, 17-Mile Drive winds past the Lone Cypress to the lodge, and Carmel-by-the-Sea remains a village where the galleries outnumber the streetlights, because there are no streetlights.

Monterey Car Week and the 2027 U.S. Open
Every August the peninsula hosts Monterey Car Week: ten days of concours, auctions and vintage racing that end on the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach. Monterey Regional absorbs roughly 675 private arrivals across the week against 225 to 250 in a normal one, which makes aircraft parking the hardest ticket in town — and it does not take a paddle. The 76th Concours d’Elegance runs Sunday, August 15, 2027; from 2028 the event moves one week earlier, so calendars set to third-Sunday-always need editing.
June 2027 is the other date that matters, and it does not come around again soon. The U.S. Open returns to Pebble Beach for championship week June 14-20, 2027 — trophy decided Sunday the 20th — the first time since 2019 and the last until 2032. A major field, its entourage and a national gallery will land on the same small peninsula Car Week fills every August. If you intend to be there, book the aircraft the day you buy the tickets.

The peninsula gives you three quite different bases. The Lodge at Pebble Beach is the one most people mean — a short walk from the eighteenth and freshly out of a property-wide refresh. Bernardus Lodge and Spa sits fifteen minutes inland in Carmel Valley, where the fog burns off earlier and the wine country begins. L’Auberge Carmel is twenty rooms in the middle of Carmel-by-the-Sea, walkable to everything that matters. If the trip is really about Big Sur, Post Ranch Inn hangs over the Pacific a scenic forty minutes south.
Car Week governs the whole calendar: rooms commit a year out, minimum-night rules appear, and rates move to a scale of their own. The shoulder months either side of summer are when the peninsula is at its best and easiest to book.

The peninsula eats far above its size — Monterey County’s only two Michelin-starred rooms sit three blocks apart in Carmel.
