Banff Has No Airport.
Calgary Is the Only Real Way In.
The Banff airstrip takes emergency and diversionary landings only — a planned arrival there is not something you can file. Springbank is closer to the mountains, but the Canada Flight Supplement caps it at propeller aircraft and Chapter 3 jets to 40,000 pounds and a 79-foot wingspan. Calgary International is where the aircraft lands. What that costs you is the drive, and we plan it first.
What to Do in Calgary and the Bow Valley
The three SkiBig3 resorts sit inside Banff National Park and share one lift ticket. Lake Louise is the largest, over 4,200 acres, and runs 6 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. Banff Sunshine is gondola-access only and holds the park’s only ski-in lodge. Mt Norquay is minutes from the townsite and runs the park’s only night skiing, to 13 March 2027.
Nakiska, out in Kananaskis, was the 1988 Olympic alpine venue and makes snow on 95 per cent of its terrain. All three Banff resorts plan to open in early November 2026.
Summer is a logistics problem. Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year round — the shuttle, a licensed operator, or a room at Moraine Lake Lodge. The Lake Louise lakeshore lot takes no reservations and fills by sunrise; Parks Canada turned away roughly three-quarters of cars last season.
Calgary itself earns a day. Studio Bell holds the National Music Centre, Heritage Park runs its historical village to mid-October, and the Bow is one of the few good fly-fishing rivers running through a city — barbless hooks, trout past 20 inches. Glenbow is shut for its rebuild until 2027.
Where to Stay in Banff, Lake Louise and Calgary
Inside the park the supply is fixed. Banff’s town boundary is set by federal law, residency is limited to people who work in the park, and commercial floor space is capped and effectively fully allocated. Nobody can build their way out of a peak week.
The Fairmont Banff Springs is the castle and the default. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise now has BASIN Glacial Waters, a thermal bathhouse for overnight guests only. The Rimrock reopened in summer 2026 as Rimrock Banff, Emblems Collection — its Bathhouse spaces open in the autumn. The Post Hotel at Lake Louise is the quieter, older answer.
Sunshine Mountain Lodge is the only ski-in, ski-out bed in the national park, at the top of the gondola. Kananaskis Mountain Lodge pairs with the Kananaskis Nordic Spa, about 117 kilometres from the airport. In Canmore, outside the park gates, the Malcolm is the comfortable base. Deer Lodge is closed with no reopening date.
In the city, the Fairmont Palliser is the 1914 railway hotel. The Dorian carries the only MICHELIN Key in Calgary. Le Germain sits at the foot of the Calgary Tower with CHARCUT downstairs. Azuridge, twenty minutes out at Priddis, is the country-estate option for a whole party.
Where to Eat in Calgary and the Mountains
The MICHELIN Guide does not cover Alberta, so the benchmark is Canada’s 100 Best, where Calgary put six rooms on the 2026 list. Eight is ninth in the country and the hardest table in the province: eight counter seats, four nights a week, no substitutions. Nupo dry-ages its own sushi. Dopo in Marda Loop opens its book at midnight, thirty days out.
River Café sits on an island in the Bow and cooks the province rather than describing it. Bar Gigi in Bridgeland has twenty seats. Gatsby’s is the only House of Hazelwood keyholder room in Canada. Shokunin has been on the national list eight years running.
The other half of Calgary is older and cheaper. Peters’ Drive-In has been on 16th Avenue since 1962 and the milkshakes are the point — thirty flavours, too thick for a straw. Spolumbo’s in Inglewood was started by three former CFL players. Silver Dragon has run dim sum in Chinatown since 1966. Shiki Menya does a twenty-hour pork broth and takes no reservations.
In the mountains, keep it short. The Bison on Bear Street is the Banff room. Park Distillery runs a working still inside the restaurant and cooks over fire. Sky Bistro is at the top of the Banff Gondola; the lift ticket books separately from the table. In Canmore, Crazyweed needs a reservation.
Flying into Calgary
Calgary International sits at 3,557 feet with the longest runway in Canada — 14,000 feet of concrete. Nothing in the fleet is limited by the pavement here. It is a full airport of entry, and CBSA names it among eight Canadian airports where US business aviation carrying up to 39 passengers may land any time the airport is operating.
Springbank is the field people ask about — 26 kilometres west of downtown, a genuine airport of entry, with CANPASS arrivals outside CBSA’s staffed hours. But the Canada Flight Supplement limits it to propeller aircraft and Chapter 3 jets to 40,000 pounds and a 79-foot wingspan. Light jets and turboprops only.
Winter is handled, not improvised. Calgary runs centralised de-icing on dedicated pads with their own frequency, and two FBOs hold heated hangars. Springbank publishes no de-icing at all.
Calgary carries a noise operating restriction in the Canada Air Pilot; Springbank has night departure restrictions. Neither is a curfew you will meet on a normal schedule, but both are worth planning around.
The Airports Peak Uses
YYC — Calgary International · 17L/35R 14,000 ft × 200 ft, 17R/35L 12,675 ft, 11/29 8,000 ft · elevation 3,557 ft · full CBSA airport of entry, business aviation to 39 passengers from the US any time the airport is operating · 17 km to downtown, 130 km and about 90 minutes to Banff · FBOs Skyservice, Shell AeroCentre and Million Air, all 24/7, the last two clearing customs on site
YBW — Springbank · 17/35 5,000 ft × 98 ft, 08/26 3,423 ft · elevation 3,940 ft · limited to propeller aircraft and Chapter 3 jets to 40,000 lb and a 79 ft wingspan · CBSA AOE/15 plus CANPASS · 26 km west of downtown on the Banff corridor · FBO Springbank Aero
YXC — Cranbrook / Canadian Rockies International · 16/34 8,000 ft × 150 ft · elevation 3,084 ft · CBSA AOE/15 · the only genuinely jet-capable alternate in the region, but it is in British Columbia and a long way from the Bow Valley
Not usable, and worth saying plainly. The Banff airstrip is restricted to emergency and diversionary landings under the National Parks of Canada Aircraft Access Regulations. Canmore is a heliport with no fixed-wing runway. Okotoks Air Ranch is 3,025 feet of 50-foot strip, and High River is non-towered with no customs. None of them is a charter answer.
Peak quotes across more than 5,000 airports in the United States and Canada. If a field is not on this list and you want to use it, ask — we will tell you honestly whether it works.

Choosing the Aircraft for Calgary
Calgary is runway-rich at 3,557 feet. The constraint is not the pavement, it is which field your aircraft is allowed to use.

Ask about baggage before you ask about seats. Ski gear and camera kit fill a light-jet hold faster than people expect.
Empty Legs to and from Calgary
Calgary is a repositioning city. Aircraft come north for Stampede and ski weeks and do not always go home full. Empty legs post with little notice, price well below a full charter, and suit a flexible date. The current list is on the empty legs page.
Calgary Charter Questions
Can a private jet land in Banff?
No. The Banff airstrip is restricted to emergency and diversionary landings under Parks Canada rules, and departing again requires the superintendent’s authorisation. Every planned arrival for Banff and Lake Louise lands at Calgary International, about 90 minutes from the townsite.
Why do most charters use Calgary International rather than Springbank?
Springbank is closer to the mountains, but the Canada Flight Supplement limits it to propeller aircraft and Chapter 3 jets up to 40,000 pounds with a 79-foot wingspan. That rules out super-midsize and heavy jets. Calgary International has no such restriction.
How does customs work flying private into Calgary from the United States?
The pilot files with the Canada Border Services Agency Telephone Reporting Centre two to 48 hours before arrival. Calgary International is a full airport of entry, and one of eight in Canada where US business aviation carrying up to 39 passengers may land any time the airport is operating.
How long is the drive from Calgary to Banff and Lake Louise?
Banff and Lake Louise Tourism gives 130 kilometres and about 90 minutes from the airport to the Banff townsite. Lake Louise is roughly 200 kilometres and about two hours. Canmore sits between them, just over an hour out.
When does Calgary book out?
Stampede week is the one to plan around: the 2027 Stampede runs 9 to 18 July, and hotel demand builds ahead of the opening weekend, not during it. The Spruce Meadows Masters takes the second week of September. In the Bow Valley, Christmas and Family Day weekend are the tight ones.
Does Peak charge membership fees?
No. Peak Aviation Solutions is a pilot-founded charter broker in Bozeman, Montana. No membership fees, no annual dues, all-inclusive pricing. Every operator is ARGUS TripCheq and Wyvern vetted, across more than 5,000 airports in the United States and Canada.
